Neandertales en Iberia

Why Iberia? Professor Nuno Bicho may have the answ'The Algarve Archaeological Association begins its 2008/9 season of talks on Tuesday, October 7, with a presentation by Professor Nuno Bicho, of the University of Faro.

His talk is entitled 'The Last Neanderthals of Southwestern Iberia'. Throughout his career Professor Bicho has made a special study of the prehistory of Iberia and in his talk he will present and discuss the possible explanations for the existence of the last Neanderthals in Iberia.

Evidence suggests that Neanderthals occupied Iberia longer than anywhere else. In fact they may have lived in an area that reached from modern day Lisbon to Malaga in Spain up to about 27,000years ago.

This is a markedly different scenario from that in other parts of Europe or the Mediterranean Basin.

Professor Bicho conducts his research in the ‘Departmento de História, Arqueologia e Património’ at the University of Faro. His main field is prehistory, having been widely published on the subject. His recent fieldwork has included excavation seasons at Val Boi and he has been in receipt of grants from such bodies as the National Geographic Society and the Archaeological Institute of America. Professor Bicho is well known to the AAA and it has been largely due to his influence that the association has been able to give financial assistance to students at the university to help them with their studies. The talks take place at the Junta Freguesia São Sebastião (near Largo São Francisco) in Loulé, at 2.30pm and at the Convento de São José in Lagoa, at 6.30pm. Admittance is free to AAA members, visitors are charged five euros.
